Blog Post #7: The Wonders of Biodiversity

In my story of the seed, the plant that I am using is Brassica oleracea. I can predict that his parents had purple and white stem because my plant has a shade of purple and white. That's why his parents might have had some combination of these traits.  Most of my plant's traits would have come from his dominant parent. My plant will likely make more seeds and pass on its traits on to the next generation of plants. Whether my plant's genetic offspring look like it depends on what is inherited from each of its parents.  They might look different because of genetic variation in the plant's gene pool that occurred over hundreds of years. The plant started with a common ancestor, but variation occurred as meiosis pairing took place over and over again. That would cause many different  forms of brassica oleracea from the same common ancestor.

Lupita Sanchez #8 : seed stories, semester 1

 1. Q: What have you learned ?
A: She learned about the nitrogen cycle and the carbon cycle.

2. Q: What made you laugh ?
A: How some of her seeds for the garden didn't grow.

3.  Q: What made you pause and make you think a little deeper?
A: She said how plants just don't need water and sunlight to grow, but also have to pass through different stages for them to be healthy.

4. Q: What surprised or amazed you?
A: She said all the different animals and insects that were in the garden.

5.  Q: What questions do you have about the things you observed or experienced in the garden?
A:  She said that she wondered how those compost help the plants grow healthier.

blog post 6

Today i went to the garden and i saw that it is growing. There is sunflower growing beside my plant which is providing some shade. There are lots of new leaves, but there are also some holes in the leaves. Because it has new leaves, I know the plant has grown. This means the plant is making more new cells. The plant's cells are rapidly dividing through mitosis. Most of this growth occurs at the plant's roots because that is where the plant soaks up nutrients from the dirt. The plant is also growing through photosynthesis because it is collecting a lot of carbon dioxide from the cars in the parking lot and turning it into oxygen and carbohydrates. Photosynthesis happens mostly in the plant's leaves. Sunlight hits the leaves and turns it into food in the plant leaves. Because the plant is bigger, we can say that it is adding biomass.
Enzymes help my plant because they play an important part in photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide combines with certain enzymes to make the plant's carbohydrates. Enzymes are also involved in respiration and the formation of ATP.

blog post #6 [ how does your garden change ]

1. Our groups' plant is growing and adding biomass because of the photosynthesis cycle it is going through, plus, its respiration level increases as the plant grows in biomass.

blog post #5

The plant is alive because if you don't water it, it will not grow and living things are affected by their surroundings.

blog post #4

1. Some abiotic factors that help with the survival of our plants are worms, to break down the soil. And butterflies / bees to transport honey and nutrients.
2. They are competing against the other plants in the garden, and I know that they are in competition because all the plants want to grow big.
3. The "loses" are the plants who aren't getting enough sun and water to survive, while on the other hand, the winners are the ones who're getting the most sunlight and water.
4. Some other interactions are the fact that some plants are in front others, so the ones that are in the front row are consuming all the sun.
5. It is primary succession because the soil was already broken down.

blog post #3

1. Ive noticed that our kale has been growing somewhat okay.
2. It relates to the water cycle because the plants absorb the water through their roots.
3. It relates to the carbon cycle because once they breathe in the oxygen they let out carbon into the air.

Garden Heroes#5

My plant is looking good. The proof that it is alive is that it is continuing to grow taller and wider. Plants are amazing because they start as seeds. The seeds then developed roots while we stored them in the classroom. When the roots got big, we put them in soil and kept them in the classroom. When I finally planted my plant, it was around 4 inches tall. Now three weeks later it is now around 11 inches tall. The leaves have gotten way bigger compared to when we first planted them. More proof that it is alive is that it has attracted a lot of insects. The insects are making holes in the plants. The plant is fighting for survival as the insects eat it for its nutrients. The butterflies, ants and other bugs are spending time around the plants. The bugs wouldn't be around the plant if it was dead because it wouldn't be beneficial for them.

Living things respond to and interact with their environment. My plant has already found a garden buddy because it growing closer and closer to the sunflower behind him. Sunflower and lettuce plants make good buddies because the sunflower provides shade which the lettuce plant likes. But sunflowers attract a lot of bugs so that may be hurting my plant. My plant contributes to the environment by being a source of food and oxygen. People need vegetable plants like cabbage and lettuce to eat and survive. People and all other organisms need the oxygen that the plants make.

     Blog post #2

Today we have picked kale seeds to grow in the garden. First we have gently opened the seed bag its important to open the bag carefully because if u don't the tiny seeds will fall everywhere. Secondly you damp a pice of paper towel and place the seeds on one side of the paper towel. Thirdly you want to fold the damp paper towel. Lastly you want place the seeds that are in the wet paper towel into a plastic bag. Over the weeks you want to check on your seeds. You want to check to see if you seeds have sprouted. Once your seeds have sprouted you can gently take your seeds off the damp paper towel. After you do that you may place your sprouted seeds into the dirt.

Garden Heroes #4

On abiotic factor that affects my plant is the sun. The plant needs sunlight to survive, but too much sun and heat can dry it out. That's why a plant alto needs rainfall, another abiotic factor. The brasssica oleracea plant needs to be kept well-watered. Without enough rainfall, it will dry out. Temperature is another important abiotic factor. My plant can be grown in the spring and in the fall, when temperatures can be unpredictable and it can get cold. The dead hay is another abiotic factor that helps keep the ground cool and improves the soil.

The biotic factors that afffect my plant are the decomposers in the ground like mushrooms, bacteria and worms. These help make good soil. Birds and insects contribute to the plant's success. They might eat the plant and cause it to deteriorate.

My plant is in competition with the sunflower right behind it. Both are fighting over who gets more water and nutrients from the soil. Also, the plant is trying to survive insects that are using it for food.
The losers and winners in a garden are determined by the amount of water and sunlight and soil nutrients that are absorbed by the plant roots. The winner gets more of the good stuff, and the loser gets less.

My plant interacts with bees and butterflies and other insects that carry pollen to the garden. There is some evidence of secondary succession in the garden. We know that the garden has been cleared of its previous plants. There are some seeds from previous plants.

I have noticed that my plant looks bigger and greener and it looks like it has bigger holes in its leaves. It does not look like it's ready to eat yet. The plant looks to be about 10 inches tall. Our plants participate in the movement of water in the biosphere by taking in water in its roots, which then sends the water to the plant's leaves and keeps it green and healthy. The plant stores water, but some of the water gets released back into the environment. My plant is helping with the carbon cycle because it does photosynthesis. It absorbs carbon and releases oxygen. My plants absorb nitrogen from dead and decaying matter that has enriched the soil. The plant uses this nitrogen to make proteins.

The purpose of this project is to learn about wildlife and plant life. We get to observe how plants work together with insects to help vegetation survive. Our group is planting Brassica oleracea. This is a type of plant that is related to cabbage. It looks like a mini bush of lettuce. At this point, our plant is fighting with other plants to get water. Our plant has grown two or three inches in the last three weeks. It is still trying to grow, but some insects are starting to eat holes into it. The plant is fighting for its survival but it continues to grow.

Brianna Sabalsa Autobioagraphy

Hi my name is Brianna,  I am from San Jose, CA

I have never really gardened before, but growing up I always watched my grand-parents work in their garden. I alway thought it looked cool so one day I thought I would help them and it was the best experience. I didn't really work in the garden after that one day because it was a lot of work.

garden heoes by Dimas

Hi my name is Dimas Romero I am from san jose california . I was born hear in 1999 with my mom. one day my school was making a garden decided to join in the group. We started to grow beats and carrots. We always harvested them one day we decided to grow a pomegranate tree' mint' tomatoes' and strawberries. I enjoy growing plants I hope to grow more in the future.

mayrabio

My name is Mayra Fernandez, and I am originally from San Jose, California. I was born here, in 2000 and I have 2 younger sisters that attend Willow Glen Elementary. My grandparents live in a small ranch in Mexico named Cuquio, Jalisco and during the summer we call them to see how things are going over there.

I have never gardened/planted any seeds of any type, so I basically have no experience with plants. But my grandma that lives in Mexico has a garden an my Grandpa farms for a living. He raises corn, beans, strawberries, wheat, and much more. I've talked to him once on the phone, and he says that it is really hard because you have to water the plants everyday and take good care of them. But mostly he says that the hardest part of all, picking the strawberries and the corn. I really wished I had experience with plants and agriculture because it sounds pretty fun! I hope that when this unit ends I will know more about plants and agriculture!
