Garden Heroes#5

My plant is looking good. The proof that it is alive is that it is continuing to grow taller and wider. Plants are amazing because they start as seeds. The seeds then developed roots while we stored them in the classroom. When the roots got big, we put them in soil and kept them in the classroom. When I finally planted my plant, it was around 4 inches tall. Now three weeks later it is now around 11 inches tall. The leaves have gotten way bigger compared to when we first planted them. More proof that it is alive is that it has attracted a lot of insects. The insects are making holes in the plants. The plant is fighting for survival as the insects eat it for its nutrients. The butterflies, ants and other bugs are spending time around the plants. The bugs wouldn't be around the plant if it was dead because it wouldn't be beneficial for them.

Living things respond to and interact with their environment. My plant has already found a garden buddy because it growing closer and closer to the sunflower behind him. Sunflower and lettuce plants make good buddies because the sunflower provides shade which the lettuce plant likes. But sunflowers attract a lot of bugs so that may be hurting my plant. My plant contributes to the environment by being a source of food and oxygen. People need vegetable plants like cabbage and lettuce to eat and survive. People and all other organisms need the oxygen that the plants make.

     Blog post #2

Today we have picked kale seeds to grow in the garden. First we have gently opened the seed bag its important to open the bag carefully because if u don't the tiny seeds will fall everywhere. Secondly you damp a pice of paper towel and place the seeds on one side of the paper towel. Thirdly you want to fold the damp paper towel. Lastly you want place the seeds that are in the wet paper towel into a plastic bag. Over the weeks you want to check on your seeds. You want to check to see if you seeds have sprouted. Once your seeds have sprouted you can gently take your seeds off the damp paper towel. After you do that you may place your sprouted seeds into the dirt.

Garden Heroes #4

On abiotic factor that affects my plant is the sun. The plant needs sunlight to survive, but too much sun and heat can dry it out. That's why a plant alto needs rainfall, another abiotic factor. The brasssica oleracea plant needs to be kept well-watered. Without enough rainfall, it will dry out. Temperature is another important abiotic factor. My plant can be grown in the spring and in the fall, when temperatures can be unpredictable and it can get cold. The dead hay is another abiotic factor that helps keep the ground cool and improves the soil.

The biotic factors that afffect my plant are the decomposers in the ground like mushrooms, bacteria and worms. These help make good soil. Birds and insects contribute to the plant's success. They might eat the plant and cause it to deteriorate.

My plant is in competition with the sunflower right behind it. Both are fighting over who gets more water and nutrients from the soil. Also, the plant is trying to survive insects that are using it for food.
The losers and winners in a garden are determined by the amount of water and sunlight and soil nutrients that are absorbed by the plant roots. The winner gets more of the good stuff, and the loser gets less.

My plant interacts with bees and butterflies and other insects that carry pollen to the garden. There is some evidence of secondary succession in the garden. We know that the garden has been cleared of its previous plants. There are some seeds from previous plants.

I have noticed that my plant looks bigger and greener and it looks like it has bigger holes in its leaves. It does not look like it's ready to eat yet. The plant looks to be about 10 inches tall. Our plants participate in the movement of water in the biosphere by taking in water in its roots, which then sends the water to the plant's leaves and keeps it green and healthy. The plant stores water, but some of the water gets released back into the environment. My plant is helping with the carbon cycle because it does photosynthesis. It absorbs carbon and releases oxygen. My plants absorb nitrogen from dead and decaying matter that has enriched the soil. The plant uses this nitrogen to make proteins.

The purpose of this project is to learn about wildlife and plant life. We get to observe how plants work together with insects to help vegetation survive. Our group is planting Brassica oleracea. This is a type of plant that is related to cabbage. It looks like a mini bush of lettuce. At this point, our plant is fighting with other plants to get water. Our plant has grown two or three inches in the last three weeks. It is still trying to grow, but some insects are starting to eat holes into it. The plant is fighting for its survival but it continues to grow.

Brianna Sabalsa Autobioagraphy

Hi my name is Brianna,  I am from San Jose, CA

I have never really gardened before, but growing up I always watched my grand-parents work in their garden. I alway thought it looked cool so one day I thought I would help them and it was the best experience. I didn't really work in the garden after that one day because it was a lot of work.
